Turkish forces and their rebel allies say they have seized control of a key Syrian city’s town centre.
It comes as ground troops have moved 30 kilometres (18.5 miles) into the northern region since the offensive began on Wednesday.
Huge explosions and plumes of smoke could be seen in border areas. The humanitarian effect is being felt on both sides. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says 24 Syrians have been killed, while the Turkish government says 18 civilians have died on the Turkish side of the border.
The United States has again warned Turkey of what it calls “consequences” if its military offensive into northeast Syria carries on.
Ege Seckin, a Turkey analyst at the political risk consulting firm IHS Markit, talks to Al Jazeera about the offensive.
